What This Means

Therapy that starts with who you are — not a diagnosis

Neurodiversity-affirming therapy is rooted in a simple premise: neurological differences like ADHD and Autism are normal human variations, not deficits to be fixed. This approach rejects the pathologizing of brains that work differently and instead focuses on understanding how you experience the world, what challenges you're actually facing, and what strengths you bring.

It's different from traditional therapy in a few important ways. We don't start with a checklist or aim to "normalize" your experience. Instead, we work with your neurotype — your actual brain — to build strategies that fit how you think, not how someone else's brain works.

Neurodiversity-affirming therapy is not about teaching you to appear more "typical." It's about helping you understand yourself, navigate the parts of life that are genuinely hard, and leverage the things you do exceptionally well.

Lived Experience

"I have extensive experience in various areas, including grief and loss, trauma, navigating life's transitions, providing support to LGBTQ+ youth, and offering Christian counseling services when requested. While working with several diagnoses, including Depression, Anxiety, PTSD, ADHD, and Bipolar Disorder."

— Nicole Butterfield, LMFT — who was also diagnosed with ADHD

Who I work with

Specialties

Four areas where I have both professional training and personal experience. Every person's experience within these areas is different — we work with yours.

ADHD

Executive function challenges, time blindness, rejection sensitivity dysphoria, and the exhausting work of masking — especially in environments built for neurotypical brains. If you've been diagnosed late (or never) and feel like you're constantly behind schedule, that's not a character flaw. It's ADHD.

As someone diagnosed with ADHD myself, I understand the internalized shame that comes from years of "just try harder." We work with your brain — not against it.

Autism

Late diagnosis, autistic burnout, sensory overwhelm, social navigation, and identity exploration. For those who've spent their whole life feeling like they don't quite fit — or like they have to perform normalcy to get through the day.

If you're a high-masking autistic person, you've probably developed elaborate strategies to hide who you really are. That's exhausting. In therapy, you don't have to do that.

Trauma

Complex trauma, PTSD, and the kind of difficult experiences that get stored in the body. I'm trained in Complex Trauma and Dissociation through the AIR Network Training Institute — an approach designed specifically for the nervous system patterns that form from prolonged, relational, or developmental trauma.

We work through these together at your pace. Not a quick fix — a real process, led by you.

Grief & Loss

Processing the loss of a person, relationship, identity, or version of life. Grief doesn't follow a schedule and it doesn't resolve on a timeline. You don't have to be "over it" to work through it.

Whether it's a death, a significant life change, a transition in identity, or the quiet grief of things not working out the way you planned — we move through it together.

How I work

Person-centered. Strengths-based.
Neurologically-informed.

I work person-centered and neurologically strengths-based. That means I see your brain differences not as problems to solve, but as contexts to understand. What are the genuine challenges? What are the things that actually work well? How do we build a life that fits how your brain actually operates?

In my office, you're allowed to feel and express those feelings safely — laughing, crying, anger, all of it. You're allowed to not know how you feel. You'll be met with compassion, empathy, real-life examples, and usually some sarcasm, if that's your jam.
